Book Review: Therese Laskey, SOFTIES

Softies by Therese Laskey

Therese Laskey’s SOFTIES is the latest contribution to the new wave of stuffie books. Populated by dogs, whales, trees, and the occasional happy meal, the projects fall on the softer side of edge (compared, say, to the underground look of The Cute Book). Thanks to good design, the book presents a coherent look, but the projects actually represent the work of 25 different toy artists from four continents, and includes tiny bios of each contributor.

The spiral binding and portfolio of paper patterns makes for easy sewing, as do the clear instructions and engaging photos. My crew, age 7-11, has tried their hands at a bunch of projects, with success. Check out Ms. Green Tea Bag (sewn by Hannah, age 11; designed by Heather Pudewa).
