Just looking

candle and tangerine

We have been doing observational painting, which builds nicely on basic drawing skills. We set up a few simple but interesting objects, and paint what we see, working with acrylic paint. The key is too look for big shapes, not details, and to look at how shadow and light changes the obvious surface color of things. (A tangerine isn’t just orange; nail polish isn’t just “clear.”) Kids are astonished as a sense of volume emerges. Paintings by Ruby, age 8.
